About Us

Background

St Catherine's is a modern, purpose built care home which occupies the ground floor of St Cuthbert's House in Newcastle's west end. The home was opened in 2004 with eleven of its forty five bedrooms allocated for the care of residents with dementia. Each bedroom is furnished to a high standard and, although designed for single occupancy, six of the rooms have connecting doors to allow couples to share space if desired.

In line with the home's policy of encouraging individuality and independence, residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms in order to maintain a ‘home from home’ feeling. Several of the bedrooms have patio doors leading out into a secure garden area.

Facilities

A typical bedroom in St Catherine's
All rooms have en-suite facilities, a television point and individually controlled central heating. There is a telephone for private use in the visitors' rooms however residents can have their own personal telephone installed in their room if they wish.

We provide adapted bathing facilities, specialist nursing beds and appropriate moving and handling equipment. Each room has a nurse call facility.

One of the dining rooms in St Catherine'sThere are two dining rooms, two living rooms, a hairdresser's / craft room and a conservatory opening onto a quiet courtyard with small shrubbery and seating area.

Living rooms have TVs, videos and music centres and one has a large wall-mounted screen and projector for showing feature films.

Music can be piped through the home if desired and induction loops are available.

The residents' garden
The outdoor space offers safe, secure, landscaped gardens where residents can relax and enjoy the fresh air.

We also have a weekly hairdressing session, a shop facility and daily newspapers are available on request.

Services are held in the home's own chapel
The ethos of the home is based upon Catholic values. We enable those who wish to continue to practice their Christian faith the opportunity to do so within the comfort of the home.
Services are celebrated by visiting ministers within our own Chapel. This is open day and night to residents, family, friends and staff and is valued for private prayer and contemplation.

"This is luxury. It's like staying in a hotel."
"It becomes your home from home."

Meals

St Catherine’s offers a varied and nutritious diet designed to suit the needs of older people. Our trained staff create appropriate diets for all residents, including those who have special dietary requirements such as gluten-free or low fat meals.
Residents are invited to discuss meal choices with staff before mealtimes and have information regarding their specific requirements recorded in a care plan. Every resident has a nutrition assessment.

Hot and cold choices are available at breakfast, lunch and high tea, and a light supper is also available. A selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks can be organised at any time.
Meals are served in dining room but may be taken in the privacy of resident’s rooms if preferred.

"The food is always good; always a choice so always something I like."
